Legal citation checker tools for AI-assisted briefs

Last reviewed November 4, 2026

Quick answerCaseRead's Hallucination Shield reads each cited source against your sentence and is free twice a day, but it is not a citator. For good-law status use KeyCite in Westlaw Advantage or Shepard's in Lexis+ with Protégé.

Legal citation checker tools compared

CaseRead's free Hallucination Shield check is the lowest-cost legal citation checker here: 2 checks a day at no charge, or included on any paid plan from Lite at $15 a month on month-to-month billing, as read on November 4, 2026. Use it as a first screen; for good-law status you need a citator.

Screens that read the source against your sentence

The Shield looks up each citation, reads the cited source against your sentence and flags what it cannot confirm. A "cite not found" result means the lookup returned no match, which is not proof the case was invented, and a "possible misuse" flag means the case exists but may not back the claim. See how to check AI citations before filing for the steps around it.

No sign-up is needed to run the free check; an email unlocks the full report past the first three citations.

Each run covers up to 50 citations, and those past the 50th are not looked up, so run a long brief in parts. CaseRead says the free check sends pasted text to its AI and data providers and asks you to contact it first for privileged material.

Citators: KeyCite and Shepard's

A citator is the tool that reports whether a case is still good law and how later cases treated it. KeyCite in Westlaw Advantage includes KeyCite Overruling Risk, which Thomson Reuters describes as a warning that a point of law has been implicitly undermined. Shepard's Verify in Lexis+ with Protégé checks citations in AI responses, documents and drafts.

CaseRead's page comparing itself with ChatGPT says it warns when a statute is marked repealed or a case has known negative treatment. That is CaseRead's own claim, and its Shield page still calls the check a screen, not a citator. The CaseRead review sets out where it stops.

Clearbrief and TypeLaw: inside Word and by service

Clearbrief says it checks citations to both law and facts inside Word without generative AI, does no legal research and is used alongside research tools to verify their output.

TypeLaw is a service, priced per brief rather than per month: $1895 for a brief, motion or pleading with next-business-day turnaround. It formats the filing, hyperlinks the citations and adds an expert quality check.

What no checker does for you

CaseRead's terms make the attorney solely responsible for verifying every citation, statute, case and factual assertion, and for complying with each court's rules on generative AI in filings. Read your own court's current orders. Paralegals running these checks can follow cite checking for paralegals; best AI legal research tools shows the research side.

A paid CaseRead plan drops the email step, and Pro and Team each start with a 7-day trial.
