Self-serve tools with a printed price

CaseRead answers from public statutes and Free Law Project case law and links each source. Its Hallucination Shield, a citation screen, reads each cited source against the sentence it supports, and CaseRead calls it a screen, not a citator. The CaseRead review covers plan contents and limits.

Paxton, a litigation research and drafting workspace, prints $499 per user a month or $2,999 per user a year, with a 7-day free trial, and you pick the billing at sign-up. NexLaw Essential is $2,999 a year per license, shown as $250 a month, with no month-to-month billing.

Citator platforms from Thomson Reuters and LexisNexis

A citator reports on the standing of a case: whether it is still good law and how later cases treated it. Westlaw Advantage includes KeyCite, and Thomson Reuters prints starting prices of $256.75 a month for one circuit or $399.75 a month for all states and federal, for new customers at firms of up to 10 attorneys. One circuit means primary law for one federal circuit and its states. The contract term behind those figures is not stated.

CoCounsel Legal, which bundles Westlaw Advantage, Practical Law and CoCounsel Essentials, shows a price only after a short form, on 1-, 2- or 3-year plans. Lexis+ with Protégé, formerly Lexis+ AI, is sold by quote, with Shepard's Verify checking citations in AI answers and drafts.

Clearbrief and general chatbots

Clearbrief runs inside Word, checks citations to both law and facts, and says it does no legal research but verifies the output of research tools. Solo is $300 per user per month on an annual subscription.

ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly, per OpenAI's help center. OpenAI says individual plans may use your content to train its models unless you turn that off in Settings. Stanford HAI's May 2024 report says its previous study of general-purpose chatbots found they hallucinated between 58% and 82% of the time on legal queries; that figure measures no current tool.

How to pick by the job you need done

Match the job to a row:

CaseRead's trial runs 7 days on Pro and Team, and Paxton's free trial also runs 7 days.
